The cotton candy machine was actually invented by a dentist.

William James Morrison was born in 1860 and became a dentist after graduating from the School of Dentistry at the University of Tennessee in 1890. In 1894, he became the president of the Tennessee Dental Association.

He has an old friend who loves sweets, candy manufacturer John C. Walton John C Wharton, the two of them came up with many creative ideas while eating sweets. This marshmallow machine first appeared at the 1904 St. Louis World Expo in the United States, and its principle is also very similar to today. Sugar is heated and melted into syrup in the machine, and then condensed into sugar filaments through high-speed centrifugal force. Moreover, at that time, it was not called marshmallow, and its previous name was better known as "Fairy Silk".

This brings up another dentist, named Joseph, who independently invented his own marshmallow machine and named this food marshmallow in 1920. From then on, the name cotton candy gradually became accepted by the public and spread.
